Plot

Kanya Godbole, who hails from a middle-class family, meets and falls in love with an extremely wealthy young man named Ayan Nanda. She doesn't disclose her status to him out of fear that he wouldn't want to pursue a relationship with her. The truth comes out shortly before their engagement, and Ayan's mother forces him to end things with Kanya. During her brief relationship with Ayan, Kanya meets his uncle Ranbir. The two of them get off to a bad start and continue bickering back and forth every time they come face to face.

Ranbir is still single because he has detested the concept of love all his life. Tired of his constant refusal to marry, his mother gives him an ultimatum – unless he finds a wife within the next three days, she will disinherit him. His cousin advises him to marry Kanya as he won't be able to arrange for a potential wife on such short notice. Ranbir and Kanya are both outraged at this idea, but agree nevertheless - he wants to save his wealth and she wants to uphold her family's reputation (as people had started accusing her of seducing Ayan for money).

A lot of light-hearted and amusing moments follow Ranbir and Kanya's wedding. When they are alone, they spend all of their time mocking each other through offensive nicknames. In front of family and friends, the pretend to be madly in love. Kanya's high-spirited maid Shanta Bai, who moves to the Nanda house along with her, is amongst the few who know about the farce of a marriage between Ranbir/Kanya. Her character provides comic relief throughout the show.

As the story progresses, the audience learns that Kanya suffers from split personality disorder. Her alter ego is named Natasha, a die-hard feminist who would go to any lengths to ensure that justice is served to the oppressed and abused women - even if it means murdering their husbands or in-laws. She is a mystery to everyone in town as nobody knows what she looks like. Whenever Kanya sees flames anywhere, she turns into Natasha. Ranbir is determined to find out who she really is, so he writes Natasha a letter claiming that a man named Ranbir Nanda is mistreating his wife. This way, he believes she would pursue him and he'd be able to see her face. After reading the letter, Natasha makes him her next target. The two of them nearly come face to face several times, but she manages to escape before he can see her.

Meanwhile, Ranbir and Kanya slowly begin to fall in love. However, their pride keeps them from admitting their feelings. They finally proclaim their love for each other after everybody comes to know about their marriage of convenience. One night, Ranbir/Natasha have a heated confrontation on the street, which is when he finally realizes that Kanya is Natasha. Later, her parents tell him that Kanya doesn't know about her split personality disorder and that it's up to him whether he still wants her as his wife. He assures them that he wants to spend the rest of his life with their daughter in spite of her flaws. A few weeks later, Ranbir and Kanya have a lavish wedding, where they go through all the rituals and take their vows again.

Ranbir invites a London based psychiatrist named Akshay to treat Kanya. However, Akshay has other plans - he wants Ranbir and Kanya to split up. Although it wasn't clearly stated on the show, Akshay hinted that Natasha wasn't Kanya's alter ego but the other way around. Kanya was adopted by her parents. Before that, she supposedly lived in London as Natasha and was in a relationship with Akshay. In order to win her back, he begins to create situations where Kanya would see fire. When she turns into Natasha, he instigates her against Ranbir, urging her to kill him.

During the final episode, Akshay elopes with Natasha, leaving Ranbir devastated. Just as all the Nandas and Godboles are lamenting over losing Kanya, she shows up in front of them. Shanta Bai smugly explains that she (Shanta) had always suspected there was more to Akshay than meets the eye. So she went to London and met up with one of Akshay's colleagues, who told her everything about his past with Natasha. Then Shanta Bai managed to stop Akshay and Natasha on their way to the airport by attacking Akshay and bringing Kanya back (it was never mentioned on the show what Shanta Bai did to make Natasha turn back to Kanya). A psychiatrist then tells everyone that Kanya's condition is treatable, but will take time. The show ends with Ranbir and Kanya's reunion.
